Tobacco Export Promotion Referendum

— Written By

A check-off referendum will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, in each flue-cured producing county in North Carolina. Flue-cured tobacco growers will vote on whether to continue support for export promotion and expansion for US flue-cured tobacco markets by Tobacco Associates, Inc. This will apply to the marketing years 2019, 2020, 2021. The referendum will be conducted by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. Polling places will be open during normal business hours at each flue-cured producing County N.C. Cooperative Extension office. The referendum will include the question of continuance of the authorization of annual assessments not to exceed one-fifth (1/5) of one cent per pound. The exact assessment is to be approved by the North Carolina Tobacco Associates Board members.

Flue-cured tobacco farmers engaged in the production of flue-cured tobacco during the 2018 crop and who share directly in the risk of production of the tobacco crop or in the proceeds of the sale of tobacco grown in North Carolina are eligible to vote.

Farmers in Vance and Warren Counties may visit their local N.C. Cooperative Extension office to cast their ballot between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the referendum date (Jan 30, 2019).
