Field Session for Chatham County Beekeeping School

The Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the Chatham County Beekeepers’ Association (CCBA), is excited to announce our in-person eight-week beekeeping school is back!

Dates: Mondays, 6:30-9:00 p.m. from January 9-March 6, 2023

Please note:

  • No class on Monday, January 16, 2023 for observation of Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday
  • March 13, 2023 will be a makeup day for inclement weather if needed

Location: Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center, Pittsboro, NC

Cost: $100.00, includes 2023 membership to the Chatham County Beekeepers’ Association

The course will be taught by experts in the field of beekeeping and pollination who are associated with both the CCBA and Cooperative Extension, and topics will range from the basics to pest control to beekeeping safety. See course outline below.

[Week 1]: January 9, 2023

Introduction to Beekeeping

Speakers: Jody Moore and Larry Daw, CCBA members

  • Course overview/the “big picture”
  • Resource list: websites, publications, organizations, listserv, NC apiary inspectors
  • Terminology overview: bees, equipment, and hive parts
  • Introduction to NCCE, CCBA, NCSBA, NC Master Beekeeper Program

[Week 2]: January 23, 2023

Beekeeping Equipment

Speaker: David Jones, CCBA member

  • Review of basic equipment and hive parts (bottom boards, hive body, supers, frames, inner cover, outer cover); what and how they work together; buying vs. building
  • Supplemental equipment: queen excluders, feeder, hive straps, moving frame, staples, etc.
  • Sources for equipment
  • Demo hiveware on-hand
  • Hiveware assembly

[Week 3]: January 30, 2023

Honey Bee Biology

Speaker: Valarie Pallatto, DVM, DACVP, CCBA member

  • Ecological context
  • Castes, life cycles, duties
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Colony life cycle (what bees do in each season)
  • Communication (pheromones, dancing)

[Week 4]: February 6, 2023

Getting Started

Speaker: Lori Hawkins, CCBA member

  • Site considerations: location, neighbors, ordinances
  • Obtaining bees: package, nuc, swarm, split, or purchasing existing colony
  • Installing bees
  • Making or buying a nuc
  • Brief overview of caring for bees (will continue to be covered in weeks 5, 6, and 8)
  • The importance of feeding after installation

Varroa Mites and IPM

Speakers: Kory Goldsmith and Daniel Harnden, CCBA members

  • Varroa mites: why they are a problem, life cycle, etc.
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, resistant breeds, screened bottom boards, proper maintenance, checking population, proper use of pesticides, mechanical controls

Diseases and Pests/Pest-like Conditions

Speaker: Rebekah Gunn, DVM, DACVP, CCBA member

  • An overview of the most common pests, diseases, and pest-like conditions of honey bees with an emphasis on the most problematic

Plants for Bees in NC; Beekeeping Safety

Speakers: Debbie Roos, Chatham County Center of N.C. Cooperative Extension and Nathan Christie, MD, CCBA member

  • Improving floral diversity for honey bees
  • Safety in the apiary, including stings from a medical perspective
