A new, year-long initiative designed to show how small scale actions can have large scale impacts!
Plant and animal diversity is shrinking, and that affects both rare species and the familiar wildlife that keeps our ecosystems healthy. Because development and fragmented habitats are changing the landscape across North Carolina—Mountains to the shore, government programs and protected parks alone can’t stop the loss.
Most land in North Carolina is privately owned, so the future of local wildlife often depends on choices we make in our yards, neighborhoods, school campuses, and along roadways. Small changes—like planting native flowers, leaving leaf litter, or reducing pesticide use—can make a big difference for birds, bees, butterflies, and other wildlife.
To support these efforts, the Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Vance County are launching “Embrace Nature,” a new program to help residents make practical, effective improvements to home landscapes and community spaces across North Carolina.
Key Features of the Initiative:
Together, we can transform ordinary spaces into thriving habitats and contribute to a healthier, more resilient environment for future generations.
- A Seasonal Approach – Activities and recommendations will be organized around the changing needs and opportunities of each season.
- Curated Resources – National, regional, and local programs, initiatives, and educational resources will be gathered to make them easier to access and use.
- Hands-on Learning Opportunities – Participants will have opportunities to meet with peers and EMG colleagues for hands-on activities, demonstrations, and discussions focused on preparing for the challenges and opportunities of each season.
- Community Building – The initiative will foster connections among individuals working to create more biodiverse and resilient landscapes.
